CHAPTER 18

Jesse

IT WAS MY TURN TO WASH DISHES AT THE STATION TODAY, SINCE PAUL cooked everyone spaghetti. After putting away the pots and pans and wiping down the tables and countertops in the kitchen, I retired to the TV lounge area to watch a little bit of television. The movie World War Z was playing, and Mike was front and center.

“Is it good?” I asked.

Mike was so engrossed in the film that when he answered me, he didn’t take his eyes off the television. “Yeah.”

“What is it about?”

“Zombies.”

“Oh, wow!” I commented. I wasn’t into the whole zombie thing, but that was all the rage on television. It seemed like every time you turned on the TV, you saw The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, you name it. Someone was dead.

Now as I began to watch this movie unfold, Special Agent McGee and Special Agent Fletcher walked in. They were both escorted into the lounge area by Paul. He pointed me out and McGee asked if she could speak to me privately. I obliged and walked into the hallway with them. Paul stayed in the TV lounge area with Mike.

Surprised by their visit, I stood there and waited for them to start the dialogue. “Is there somewhere we can sit and talk in a more private setting?”

“Well, I don’t have an office, but you can come to my room,” I volunteered.

“Okay, yeah let’s do that,” Agent McGee insisted.

I led the way to my room, and after we entered, Agent McGee took a seat on the chair next to my small desk, while the other agent stood up next to her. I sat down on my bed.

“So I know you’re wondering why we’re here?” she started off.

I nodded my head and said yes.

“Well, we’re here for a few reasons. You already know we’re investigating the insurance fraud and murder case of Alonzo Riddick, and Tim was helping us with that, but, unfortunately, he’s no longer with us . . .”

I sighed heavily. “Yeah.”

“Speaking of which . . . the homicide detectives investigating that case spoke with you, right?”

“Yes, we spoke extensively,” I assured her, giving the agents an ogling expression. “Have you spoken with them?” I threw the question back at them. I wanted to see if we were on the same page.

“Yes, we’ve spoken with them on several occasions. Why do you ask?” She became inquisitive.

“I told them that I believed Alayna had something to do with Tim’s murder. She’s behind it.”

Agent McGee smiled at me and then looked at her partner. They both smiled at one another and then she looked back at me.

“Do tell,” she coached me.

“Look, the night he left out of here, I told him not to go. But being the stubborn person he is, he did it anyway. Talking about how she really needed to talk to him about something important. And then fast-forward a few hours later, he’s dead. Now tell me that wasn’t a setup?” I pointed out.

“So you think she had Tim killed?”

“Yes, I do.
